Car Insurance in Oklahoma
The only required coverage for the state of Oklahoma is liability insurance, this applies to all vehicles. However you can establish financial responsibility by a $75,000 cash deposit to the Department of Public Safety or by covering yourself under the Oklahoma Assigned Risk Auto Plan. If you own more than 25 vehicles you also can apply for a self insurance policy.
Minimum liability coverage required by the state of Oklahoma consists of:
- $25,000 per one person to pay for bodily injury
- $50,000 per accident to pay for bodily injuries, and
- $5,000 per accident to pay for property damage.
Besides the ownership of the correct liability insurance policy, the State requires all drivers to carry proof of insurance at all times, this can be the insurance ID card that your insurance company will provide at the time of purchasing the policy. Also you can have a certificate of the deposit or of self insurance. If you fail to comply with this requirement you can face fines, possible jail sentences and suspension of driver license and registration. This proof of financial responsibility may be requested upon routine inspections by law enforcement officers, a scheduled inspection established by the State or if you are part of an automobile accident.
Although only liability insurance coverage is required, there is other types of insurance available, to compliment and widen your protection options. Most common types of additional coverage that any carrier will offer you are Comprehensive, Collision and Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist.
In the event of an accident not related to collision with another vehicle, comprehensive coverage will take care of the expenses to fix your car and getting it working again. These circumstances involve accidents produced by bad weather, such as wild fires, high winds and floods, collisions with wildlife on the road, damage caused by vandalism and theft.
Collision coverage will help you pay for damage caused to your own property by an accident. It will not matter the intensity of the collision or if it was with another moving vehicle or something like a tree, fence or a wall. It will help you restore your vehicle and have it working as before.
It is imperative to learn that neither Comprehensive nor Collision coverage will ever pay for any expense other than those derived to fixing your vehicle. They will not cover medical expenses, ambulances or legal fees.
Also available, there is Uninsured / Underinsured motorist, this will help you when the driver responsible for the accident has too little coverage to take care of your expenses or completely lacks of it. Also it will cover when you are held responsible for the accident and your liability coverage isn't enough to take care of the costs. Uninsured Motorist is used when the driver that caused the accident flees the scene and leaves you in a hit and run situation.
The more types of coverage you have, the better protected your assets will be. Think of insurance as an investment and get the best assessment before purchasing it.
