Car Insurance in North Dakota
This is a no fault state, this means that if an accident occurs, all drivers involved will be covered by their own insurance policy, no matter who's fault was it. Because of this particular policy, North Dakota establishes that all drivers must have liability insurance for at least $25,000 per driver for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury (this covers two or more people involved) and $25,000 to take care of damage caused to property. Also North Dakota mandates drivers to own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and uninsured coverage. PIP Coverage will take care of yourself (as no fault requires) however, if the other driver's medical expenses exceed what its coverage takes care of, your liability coverage can help pay for that (if you were responsible for the accident)
Uninsured motorist insurance coverage is required and it will help when you are involved in an accident with a driver that is uninsured. Also it will assist you in case of a hit-and-run situation. Uninsured minimum coverage required is of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury (same minimums for underinsured coverage). Also it is established a $30,000 minimum coverage for no-fault. If the driver responsible for the accident has not enough or no insurance coverage at all, you might have to pay out of your own pocket any expenses of which you are not even responsible. By having this coverage, you will get immediate attention and later your insurance company will deal with the person that caused the accident, looking to get back the money they already provided you for medical expenses. If this coverage wasn't mandatory, still is one of the most recommended insurance coverages available.
It is recommended to add collision and comprehensive coverage; comprehensive will take care of damage caused to your vehicle on non automobile related accidents (debris on a storm, an accident with an animal on the road, etc.). On the other hand, collision coverage is self explained; however it is important for you to be aware that collision coverage will only take care of expenses related to getting your vehicle fixed and ready to be used again, this won't pay for any legal or medical expenses.
Proof of self-insure is accepted only if you have 25 or more vehicles registered to your name.
If by any chance, you are unable to get coverage for your vehicle, you can apply for the North Dakota Auto Insurance Plan.
Your insurance company will provide you with an Insurance ID that comes in the form of a card. This card will be required for you to be carried at all times, if by any chance a law enforcement officer asks to see it, you must comply with it. Also proof of financial responsibility can be a certificate demonstrating you have applied to ND Auto Insurance Plan or that you are self-insured.
If you fail to provide proof of auto insurance or financial responsibility you can be fined with a minimum of $150 for first time offense. Second time offense will get your plates impounded until you manage to show proof of owning car insurance.
Why Car Insurance?
First reason why you need Auto or Car Insurance is because it is required, in almost all 51 States, to have auto liability insurance.
Auto Insurance is there to protect your assets. If you are involved in a car accident, auto insurance will help you take care of medical bills, the cost of reparation for vehicles involved, even sew costs (this may vary, depending on the insurance plan you have selected).
