Car Insurance in Mississippi
In the state of Mississippi it is required for all drivers to own the correct Auto Insurance liability policy. As other states, Mississippi establishes its own minimum coverage requirements for financial responsibility.
Financial responsibility can be achieved by different ways, most common are; purchase of auto liability insurance policy, cash deposit at the State Treasurer and by securing a bond with an authorized surety company. Except for the liability policy, other proof of financial responsibility will consist on a certificate.
Liability Coverage in MS states a minimum of:
- $25,000 for bodily injury per person,
- $50,000 per accident in the same line as before and,
- $25,000 for property damage per accident.
Being all of them minimums, you must consider having higher coverage if your budget allows it, the more coverage you own, the less probability of getting sued or having your properties compromised to pay any debts derived from an accident.
It is required for you to maintain your Insurance ID handy at all times, this can be requested by a law enforcement officer at any time and also if you are involved in an accident. For self insured and bond or cash deposit insured drivers, a certification of this payment method will be used as proof.
If you fail to comply with this requirement you can face paying a fee and having your registration suspended.
There are other coverages available to broaden your protection, common additional coverage types are Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist, Comprehensive and Collision coverage.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage were created to help you when in an accident in which you are not responsible for causing it, the driver that caused it has little or none liability insurance. Uninsured will pay for when the person held responsible lacks of insurance to pay for any damage or injuries that might have caused you and your passengers. On the other hand, underinsured coverage helps pay for when that person owns liability insurance, but the amount is not enough to pay for your bills. It is also common to use uninsured motorist coverage to pay for hit and run accidents.
Comprehensive and Collision coverage although not mandatory, are strongly suggested since they will help you pay for damages caused by events not related to car collision and also to take care of reparation bills for your vehicle involved.
Comprehensive insurance will cover your vehicle of any physical damage caused by forces of nature, such as high winds, floods, fires, tornados, lightning, etc. wildlife also is included in this coverage, in case you have an accident with a wild animal crossing a road or jumping at you. Physical damage caused by theft and vandalism are also included.
Collision coverage pays for any physical reparation your vehicle may need after an accident, regardless responsibility or type of accident. It can be a high speed accident or a common bump when backing up your car or parking it at a lot. Collision and comprehensive will only pay for reparations, they will not pay for medical expenses.
