Car Insurance in Louisiana
The State of Louisiana Law requires all drivers to own auto insurance liability coverage and carry proof of it at all times. Unlike other states the State of Louisiana doesn't consider Uninsured / Underinsured Coverage as mandatory. Only Mandatory coverage is Liability. Comprehensive and Collision coverage can also be acquired but only as optional to your principal coverage.
Minimum Liability coverage required consists in:
- One Person - $10,000 for bodily injury
- Per Accident - $20,000 for bodily injury
- Per Accident - $10,000 for damage to property
When solicited by any law enforcement officer in the State of Louisiana, you must demonstrate proof of owning Auto Insurance Liability Policy. Proof consists in a card emitted by your insurance company and a sticker placed correctly inside of your car on the front glass. If you are unable to demonstrate the ownership of auto insurance, you have 3 days to present it to the OMV (Office of Motor Vehicles).
After this time of grace passes, if pulled over or requested to show your proof of auto insurance and still you have no means to demonstrate it, your car can be impounded. In order to get it back you must pay the fine established and prove you own liability insurance policy for that vehicle.
Although not required by the state, there are other insurance coverage types that are usually bought to compensate the fact that Liability insurance will only pay for damage and injuries caused to others but the insurance owner. Among the most common additional coverage available are, Comprehensive, Collision and Uninsured / Underinsured motorist.
Your Liability coverage will pay a certain amount to fix any property other than yours that was damaged during the accident, this leaves your own vehicle unprotected, to help with this issue Collision and Comprehensive coverage will pay for any reparations your vehicle may need. Collision will pay to fix any physical damage caused when your vehicle collides with another one, or if you collide with a non moving object, like a wall, street light, etc. But it will not pay for any medical or legal expenses. Comprehensive provides coverage when the damage is caused by something not related to an automobile accident, such as severe weather events like floods, wild fires, high winds, etc. Also it will pay if you are hit by wildlife or for the physical damage your vehicle may suffer during theft or vandalism.
Uninsured and Underinsured motorist can be used when you are not responsible for the accident but the one who is either lacks or doesn't have enough coverage. Uninsured motorist is the one that pays for when the driver responsible for the accident, has too little liability insurance to pay for your and anyone else involved in the accident's injuries and damages. Uninsured motorist is to be used if you are not the one that caused the accident but the person that did lacks of auto insurance coverage. In most cases of hit and run, uninsured motorist is used to pay for the insured's own bills.
Why Car Insurance?
First reason why you need Auto or Car Insurance is because it is required, in almost all 51 States, to have auto liability insurance.
Auto Insurance is there to protect your assets. If you are involved in a car accident, auto insurance will help you take care of medical bills, the cost of reparation for vehicles involved, even sew costs (this may vary, depending on the insurance plan you have selected).
