Car Insurance in Idaho

The state of Idaho requires drivers to maintain continuous liability insurance. The minimum for liability insurance coverage is as follows:

  • One person, bodily injury or death $25,000
  • More than one person bodily injury or death $50,000
  • For property damage it is required a minimum of $15,000

It is required to carry at all times proof of liability insurance or financial responsibility. The state of Idaho also lets the driver choose instead of auto liability insurance an indemnity bond emitted by an authorized surety company. This bond will hold you responsible to pay within 30 days nothing under $50,000 for any accident. From this amount $15,000 goes into property damage. This option can be used preferably if you own five or more vehicles. ($120,000) in case you own more than 25 cars you can apply for self-insurance. For this it is required you can prove to have more than $500,000 net.

All motorbikes and ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) are required to have liability insurance whenever they are used on public roads on state and federal land.

Proof of insurance can be presented in the way of an insurance id card that will be provided by your insurance company or carrier or if you own an indemnity bond DMV or your broker can provide proof of this. Failure to comply with this requirement can turn into a $500 fee and the suspension of your license and registration.

In addition to liability insurance policy, vehicle owners decide to purchase other coverage for their car, most commonly added are Collision and Comprehensive. Collision coverage pays for damage you may cause to your vehicle as a result of an accident either with another car, or if you crash into none moving objects, such as street lights, trees, walls, etc.  This can be considered as an expensive coverage, but it is also one you are more likely to use.

The other additional coverage is Comprehensive, similar to collision, this coverage will help pay for physical damage caused to your car, but in this case it is because of an event not related to a collision or that does not include other vehicles, such cases are flooding, fires, falling debris from a tornado or high winds, theft and vandalism. It is also useful if it's feasible to encounter wildlife on the roads you often drive through.

Both additional coverage types are not considered to be mandatory by the State, and are only options for you to better protect your property and help pay for fixing it after an accident. Keep in mind that liability insurance coverage will only pay for damage and injuries you cause to others, it will not pay to repair your vehicle.

Always shop around before buying Auto insurance, remember that what works for others, does not necessarily means it is the best policy for you. Insurance prices may vary depending on factors such as driver's history, vehicle year and make, use given to the vehicle, driver's marital status and age, location, and number of people covered by this policy.
