Car Insurance in Delaware
In the state of Delaware, only auto Liability insurance is required, and it should be purchased on the minimum amounts of:
- $15,000 per person to cover bodily Injury/Death
- $30,000 per accident to cover bodily Injury/Death
- $10,000 to pay for property damage
The state of Delaware will only accept those liability insurance policies issued by insurance companies licensed for this state. Liability insurance must be active all times.
It is required for you to carry proof of your liability insurance policy, if you are unable to show this proof to a law enforcement officer, you can get fines that go from $1500 the first time to $3000 for recurring events during the following 3 years of the first offense. Your Driving License can also be suspended for 6 months as well as other privileges.
The Department Motor Vehicles (DMV) can perform random checks to registered vehicle owners. If asked you must present a certification of your insurance (form FR-19) if you don't you'll have your driving license removed and be charged with a fine
If you are considering canceling a registered vehicle's insurance policy, you must surrender your license plates before. License plates may be handed in at the DMV offices or mailed (see mailing address below) and can be returned free of charge once the right insurance policy is provided and the vehicle's registration hasn't expired. If you are mailing the license plates also include a note explaining the motive for their surrender. The surrender of license plates and canceling of insurance policy may occur when you decide to sell your vehicle, move to another state or simply because that vehicle is not suited to be on the streets anymore and you decide to retire it.
To mail Delaware's DMV you can use the following address: Division of Motor Vehicles, Uninsured Motorist Section, P O Box 698, Dover Delaware (DE) zip code 19903.
Insurance Companies inform the DMV when a policy is cancelled; therefore if you haven't surrendered the plates you may be contacted to demonstrate the ownership of liability insurance. Penalties for not complying with this can go from $100 for each vehicle uninsured from 1 day to a month and additional $5 per vehicle until plates are surrender.
There is other auto insurance coverage types which you may like to consider, to help protect your assets and pay for any reparations your vehicle could need. Keep in mind that Liability insurance only pays for damage and injuries you may cause to others, leaving your needs unattended.
The most common coverage for auto insurance are; Comprehensive, Collision, Uninsured/underinsured motorist. Comprehensive coverage helps pay for those events which are not related to a collision with another vehicle, such as bad weather accidents (a tree branch falls on your vehicle's windshield), fire, floods or vandalism. On the other hand, collision coverage will provide you with the funds needed to fix your own vehicle, after a collision it is almost certain that reparations might be needed.
Lastly there is Uninsured/underinsured motorist, this as the name explains, is for when the responsible driver has no insurance or their coverage will not be enough to pay for the damage and injuries you have suffered.
Why Car Insurance?
First reason why you need Auto or Car Insurance is because it is required, in almost all 51 States, to have auto liability insurance.
Auto Insurance is there to protect your assets. If you are involved in a car accident, auto insurance will help you take care of medical bills, the cost of reparation for vehicles involved, even sew costs (this may vary, depending on the insurance plan you have selected).
