Car Insurance in Connecticut
The state of Connecticut, as other states, expresses that all registered motor vehicles are required to have liability insurance. Your vehicle will be authorized to be used on public roads only if it's properly insured. Insurance companies are required to keep a record of uninsured vehicles, this information is shared with the Department of motor vehicles (DMV) and they can go after unregistered vehicles. Insurance Department can be reached at 860-297-3800 for any questions.
If by any circumstances you decide to cancel your auto insurance plan, the insurance company will notify the DMV of your cancelation. You'll receive a warning note that will indicate you the opportunity to obtain new insurance or to enter into a consent agreement and pay a $200 fine. The failure to comply with this note of warning may result in the suspension of your vehicle's registration and even your loss of all privileges to register another vehicle or renew your existing insurance.
Your insurance company or carrier can provide you with a "suspension of liability" whenever you intend to not use a vehicle for a certain amount of time (this applies to seasonal vehicles). During this period of time, you are not entitled to operate your vehicle under any circumstances. Comprehensive coverage can be used instead and the use of this type of insurance will prevent your vehicle from being reported and also will help reduce your rate.
If still you don't want to pay insurance for a vehicle that will not be moved by any chance, you can request the DMV to keep your drivers plates on hold.
Liability Insurance coverage is required at a minimum of:
- $20,000 for one person bodily injury/death
- $40,000 per accident for bodily injury/death
- $10,000 per accident for property damage expenses
Keep in mind that Liability coverage will pay for everyone but the insurance owner. To protect your property (vehicle) and pay for any expenses you may incur, there is other insurance coverage you may want to consider.
Other coverage you may like to consider is Comprehensive and Collision. Comprehensive coverage will pay for damage caused by non collision related accidents, such as bad weather (floods, fires, earthquakes, etc.), theft and vandalism, as well as any damage caused by encountering wildlife (on a deer crossing for example).
As previously mentioned, your liability insurance policy will help pay for damage and you cause to others, so Collision coverage can help you pay for your own vehicle reparations. This coverage is something that you may want to consider adding, since chances are that your vehicle will suffer same or even more damage than that you inflict on the other vehicle. Your car is your asset, don't leave it unprotected.
Ownership of the right auto insurance liability policy may be proven by showing the Insurance ID card that the insurance company will provide when the policy is purchased. In some cases a temporary card will be emitted but will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
Why Car Insurance?
First reason why you need Auto or Car Insurance is because it is required, in almost all 51 States, to have auto liability insurance.
Auto Insurance is there to protect your assets. If you are involved in a car accident, auto insurance will help you take care of medical bills, the cost of reparation for vehicles involved, even sew costs (this may vary, depending on the insurance plan you have selected).
