What is PIP? And Why Do I Need It?

PIP Stand for Personal Injury Protection. In most states PIP is an option and not required. If you need PIP and how much of it you need depends a lot upon what other insurance you have. PIP is designed mainly to pay for your medical expenses, if you are involved in an accident where you are at fault, or if the other party does not have adequate coverage to pay for you injuries. Most people who have adequate health insurance therefore figure they do not need PIP, as their health insurance will pay for their injuries if the other fellows auto insurance will not.

But let's take a closer look at that picture. True, PIP will pay for your medical expenses, as will your health insurance, if you are lucky enough to have such coverage. But PIP also may pay for other things that health insurance is not designed to, such as, lost wages, homecare, or other compensations for pain and suffering. Also PIP will cover injuries to your passengers, or oath licensed drivers who may be using your vehicle. Your personal health insurance policy will not. And of course, if your health insurance is based on your job, we all know these days that there is no guarantee that you will always have that coverage. You cannot "lose" your PIP insurance, as long as you keep your auto insurance policy in effect.

In general most insurance professionals agree that for the price it costs to add PIP, (it usually ads very little to your overall annual premiums) it does make sense to add some level of PIP to your auto insurance. Still, they also say that it does depend a lot on how you drive and again, what your healthcare insurance situation is. If you are employed full time with good insurance and do not do very much driving, and when you do, are usually on your own, you probably could get by without PIP. On the other hand if you are a self employed consultant on the road everyday who often drives others two and from appointments, it would be very risky to go without PIP.

How Much Does Pip Cost?

Generally speaking PIP can add only a few dollars more per month to most insurance policies, depending of course on where you live, how you drive, your insurance company - the usual parameters. In fact on most policies when you are selecting coverages PIP usually "defaults" and drivers need to "opt out" of PIP. Seattle area auto insurance agent Wilson Hui says, "I find that when it comes to PIP, some people just have to have it. But most people weigh what it costs against what you get. To get  $35,000 in peace of mind costs only around five dollars more a month. You might not need PIP, but why not get it?  For the price of a coffee or two, it's worth it."
